Mount Agung At Last

So, whatever happened to the eruption of Mount Agung, which I reported on a couple of months ago.  It looked like despite predictions, the residents of Bali had dodged a bullet and things had returned to normal.  Then, a few days ago, things changed:

This is already a fairly substantial eruption, and we have no idea what will happen next.  I'll keep watching over the next few days.

Our airlines cancelled flights out of Bali this afternoon because of the ash cloud. They're not flying anyone to there but trying to get people out. It's the end of the school year here and Bali is a big holiday destination. I have no desire to go there again but a lot of people like it.
When Krakatoa blew it changed the atmosphere in the northern hemisphere for years. Hopefully it won't eventuate to something like that, but it's possible.

And if you look at the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, it was even worse. That caused "the year without a summer" in the United States, and caused massive famine in Europe due to crop failures.

The worst of it, though, is having to hear the anti-global warming jerks lying about there being no global warming for the next few years.

Hamas

  Of ocurse I am going to take the opportunity to talk about the Hamas attack on Israel.   First, I'd like to talk about my background, or baggage, regarding the country.   I have lived in Israel, some years ago.   This was not for religious reasons; I spent several months there working on a movie.   During pre-production, weeks of location scouting and shooting the movie, I was all over the country, and spent a fair amount of time in the West Bank, where we also shot.   This included a lot of places that normal tourists would not see, including predominantly Arab areas such as East Jerusalem, the Arab quarter of the old city, Ramla and the southern part of Jaffa, which is predominantly Arab.   It also included heavily Orthodox areas like Mea Shearim.   I dealt with Israeli Arabs, Palestinians and Bedouins.     Here are a few things I believe I learned there:   First of all, the Palestinians I knew were perfectly normal people with the same interest in living a safe, secure
