Fat Man

In the coverage of Fats Domino's death this week, here's something that caught my attention:  One of his early songs had the following lyric:

"They call me the Fat Man
Because I weigh 200 Pounds."

Today in the United States, that would be "the average man."

Anyway, let's just go out on a favorite of mine that hasn't gotten quite as much airplay as his more famous hits this week:

My favorite Fats Domino song for sure. I heard it on the Johnnie Otis Show from KPFK, Los Angeles. Johnnie used to spin platters of R&B from the late 1940s to the early 1960s every Monday night from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. I must have listened for twenty years. After I moved out of Dad's place in La Jolla, I remember that my buddy and I used to roll down to Windansea surfing beach to park in the famous lot and tune in the airwaves beaming down the coast from Glendale.

It's a beautiful melody and a beautiful tribute to New Orleans.

"I'll need two pairs of shoes just to walk away these blues."
