The Largest Tax Increase in History?

Surprise!  The Republicans are lying again.

It has already become a staple of Republican propaganda that the mandate in the Affordable Care Act is the biggest tax increase in the HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!  A couple of examples:

Rush Limbaugh:  " And what we now have is the biggest tax increase in the history of the world."

Sarah Palin:  "We now see that this is the largest tax increase in history."

Representative Jeff Landry:  " “This is the largest tax increase on the poor and the middle class in the history of this country..."

Red State:  "The Supreme Court today upheld in its 5-4 decision on the Affordable Care Act the largest tax increase in U. S. History."

Daily Caller:  "Out of all the smoke and mirrors comes the biggest tax increase this country has ever seen." 

Now, please believe me- I could go on all day quoting more examples of this claim, which has become absolutely established fact on the other planet where Republicans live.

A few minutes work was all it took for them to discover that, as usual, this Republican claim is a malignant lie.  It's mighty hard to have a real conversation about the future of our country with people who will spout any falsehood they can think of rather than admit that they are wrong. And particularly in the face of a mainstream press which will present Republican lies and the truth as equally likely to be correct.  Pretty sad, huh?

These claims of record tax increase are from the same constitutional scholars that assured us the health care act was unconstitutional. It's beginning to look like they are wrong about a lot of things.

Hamas

  Of ocurse I am going to take the opportunity to talk about the Hamas attack on Israel.   First, I'd like to talk about my background, or baggage, regarding the country.   I have lived in Israel, some years ago.   This was not for religious reasons; I spent several months there working on a movie.   During pre-production, weeks of location scouting and shooting the movie, I was all over the country, and spent a fair amount of time in the West Bank, where we also shot.   This included a lot of places that normal tourists would not see, including predominantly Arab areas such as East Jerusalem, the Arab quarter of the old city, Ramla and the southern part of Jaffa, which is predominantly Arab.   It also included heavily Orthodox areas like Mea Shearim.   I dealt with Israeli Arabs, Palestinians and Bedouins.     Here are a few things I believe I learned there:   First of all, the Palestinians I knew were perfectly normal people with the same interest in living a safe, secure
